The things I think are most helpful to know first as you start your post-Mormon life. I’ll add resources as I have time and as I find or create said resources. These “First Things” posts may also appear in other sections of the Apostasy 101 listings.
- “Faith-Transition Grief for Ex-Mormons.” This post talks about the five stages of grief in relation to Mormon faith transitions and contains some introductory information about denial, anger, bargaining, depression/sadness, and acceptance.
- “Ex-Mormon Anger, Part 1: All About Anger.” This post provides a primer on what anger is, why you need it, and how to express it healthily. I also recommend parts 2 and 3 of this anger series, which deconstruct LDS teachings on anger and contention.
- “Confronting Fear.” This post compares LDS teachings on fear to psychological understandings of the purposes of fear, details the role fear commonly plays in a faith transition, and offers some suggestions for managing fear.
- “5 Tips for Setting Boundaries.” This post offers five tips for setting boundaries that help you have fulfilling, healthy relationships and not lose yourself.
- “Science Explains ‘The Holy Ghost’.” by Zelph on the Shelf (<10-minute YouTube video). This video gives a scientific explanation for some of the spiritual experiences you may have had.
- “Where Does Morality Come From?” This post provides an overview of moral psychology, especially Jonathan Haidt’s moral intuitionism. Read this if you want to know where morality comes from if there’s no God.
