Scripture in any tradition is a collection of sacred writings, often stories. Since people are story-oriented, we all have stories we hold in high regard, if not as the word of God.
This playlist contains information about story interpretation as well as non-literal interpretations of classic scripture stories.
If you are now an atheist who never wants to look at a Bible or Book of Mormon again, then I totally get that. However, if you would like to reinterpret traditional stories, viewing them just as stories, then that can also be helpful. There are many Christians whose belief in Jesus is metaphorical: they don’t view Jesus as the Risen Redeemer of the world.
If your family is devout, and especially if you are in a mixed-faith marriage, then reinterpreting scripture stories can help you to find value in them on your own terms. Doing so can help you show your family that you support them and are willing to seek beauty and meaning in things they find deeply meaningful.
Progressive interpretations of scripture can also help your family and the Church become more inclusive. For example, if your children are being raised in the Church, then teaching them ways to read the Book of Mormon that support indigenous sovereignty can help you align their Church experience with antiracist values.
